For senior homeowners in Connecticut, getting cheap home insurance is difficult enough, but for those who have taken long-term policies in preparation for a comfortable life in nursing homes, the problem has just gotten bigger.

This is because the Insurance Department of the state has recently approved a 39% rise in long term insurance premiums offered by MetLife. Elderly residents who have policies for this type of insurance are facing a yearly payment that is almost double of what they used to pay. According to most of them, this could prove to be impossible to fulfill.

The premiums, which are meant to cover in-home assistance and nursing home care, have reportedly been rising in the past few years, but the recent jump is the highest so far for state holders. There have also been reports that insurer John Hancock is also planning to increase its rates by around 40%.

According to insurance industry analysts, just like the problem with providing cheap home insurance, long term providers are finding it hard to get returns that will allow them to pay for holders' nursing home care. On average, semi-private rooms in nursing homes in the state can cost as much as $79,000 every year.

Insurance firms' lack of earnings is partly attributed by analysts to the low rates of interest and the companies' miscalculation of the number of policyholders expected to drop their coverage prior to collecting. On the part of the policyholders, majority of them have stated that dropping their policies will mean losing everything they have put into them, which in most cases, are equivalent to lifetime savings.

The problem has widespread implications for the lives of senior citizens. In a research conducted by Boston College's Center for Retirement Research, it has been found that around one third of Americans who will turn 65 this year will require at least 90 days of nursing home services.

In addition, the Kaiser Foundation has revealed in a report published in 2009 that over 10 million U.S. residents will require long-term medical services and care and the figure is expected to rise further. Analysts have stated that for senior Americans, it seems that finding cheap home insurance is not the only problem facing them in these difficult times.

The 2010 version of the Consumer Shopping Guide for Homeowners and Tenants Insurance has been published by the Insurance Department of New York State. The document is meant to offer information to renters and homeowners that will help them select tenant and home insurance services that are appropriate for their level of needs.

According to department officials, they are hoping that the document will aid renters and property owners find the coverage they really need with a minimum amount of fuss. The guide offers premium comparisons for policies offered by various insurance firms for a certain type of property. It touches upon all types and all available policies and how each can help protect a property owner's home. Issues like reporting losses, filing complaints at the department and handling provider-related disputes are also discussed in the report.

The said department encourages residents of New York to get hold of the guide as it will allow them to learn what constitutes a home insurance policy. According to them, homeowners and tenants should be aware that home insurance services do not include earthquake or flood coverage. The various methods by which deductibles are determined are also discussed in the document.

As an example, the guide reveals that some deductibles are determined using dollar values, while others are based on homes' replacement values or coverage amount. Meanwhile, some areas in the coast will require mandatory deductibles for hurricanes that can range from 1% to 5%. The range is usually determined by the insurance firm, wind speed or storm category.

Department officials have advised residential property owners and home renters to get in touch with their insurance service providers and discuss their needs so that their policies can be adjusted appropriately. They also remind people seeking insurance to read the guide, examine their policies and analyze how such services work.

The guide published by the department is meant to save renters and residential property owners from time and money-related problems. It also aims to prevent people looking for home insurance services from committing common mistakes encountered by those who do not know what exactly the service is for.

The life, car and home insurance company Farmers Insurance Group is being sued by more than 1,000 homeowners from Los Angeles, California for allegedly refusing to honor policyholders' claims. The claims were made for the damage caused by the Station fire on the plaintiffs' properties.

According to the charges made by the homeowners living in the Station fire area, Farmers Insurance denied payouts and in some cases, minimized claim payouts for damages caused by the fire and by the ash and soot that came from the blaze. The damages sought by the plaintiffs were unspecified. A spokesman from the insurance firm has stated that Farmers' legal unit is currently reviewing the lawsuit.

The Station blaze started on August 26, 2009 at the Angeles Crest Highway and continued on for over a month. It consumed 89 residential properties and forest land estimated to be totaling 160,000 acres. It also caused the death of two firefighters from Los Angeles County. The fire produced ash cloud that covered communities in the county's foothills and produced a smoke-filled smell among houses and cars for several weeks.

One of the plaintiffs in the case against the home insurance company, a resident of Palm Drive, reported that her residence was covered in ash and smoke while the fire rages on. After the fire was put under control, she revealed that her swimming pool had ash for months.

Every time rain or wind passes through the area, ash would accumulate in her pool and in her yard. She also stated that an assessor from Farmers Insurance visited her home to take samples and later informed her that the damage only amounted to $600, which means that she did not meet the deductible minimum of $1,000.

Some of the homeowners who filed the lawsuit have complained that other residents living in the foothills, including those who live even further from the area of fire, were able to receive claim payouts. Lawyers for the plaintiffs have added that the home insurance company is deliberately denying the claims in the hope that the homeowners will end up getting discouraged and will just give up.

Casualty, specialized and home insurance provider Allied World Assurance Holdings Ltd. has recently purchased back stocks from Goldman Sachs Group Inc.-affiliated funds, which served as the company's founding shareholders. The stocks were reportedly worth $250 million.

Allied World was said to purchase back five million shares at a price of $50 per share. The firm made the purchase from several investment funds that serve as affiliates of Goldman Sachs, including GS Capital Partners. The buy-back offered a discount of 0.5%. A spokesperson from Allied has asserted that the buy back was in no way related to the recent financial rules reform.

The recent change in financial regulations restricts proprietary trading among banks and also sets limit on hedge fund investment and private equity size. This led to speculations as to who among the lender banks will get out of the business of proprietary trading to comply with the latest financial rules change. Some analysts speculated that Goldman will likely reduce its private equity position over time, instead of spinning out its various units, including GS Capital Partners.

According to home insurance provider Allied World, the buy back represented outstanding shares of 9.4%, leaving the Goldman affiliate with over three million non voting stocks, which represent 7.2% of outstanding shares. According to officials, the current repurchase is a separate deal from the repurchase initiative worth $500 million authorized by the Allied board last May 2010.

Allied World, best known as a provider of casualty, specialty and property insurance and reinsurance, has denied that the decision has something to do with recent reforms in financial industry regulations.

In a buyback situation, a company can purchase its own stocks back through cash distribution to shareholders in exchange for part of the outstanding equity. The company then has the option to keep the stocks and wait for the right time to make a re-issue, keep them as treasury shares or retires the stocks completely.

The decision of home insurance company Allied World Assurance Holdings Ltd. to repurchase $250 million worth of its shares may provide benefits to the company in the long run. For now, the company is said to be satisfied with how things turned out financially.

The Louisiana Senate will soon deliberate on a bill that would prevent house insurance firms from canceling coverage for homeowners and businesses with properties that have Chinese corrosive drywall.

The bill, authored by Senator Julie Quinn, is designed to stop insurance companies from not renewing or from canceling or raising deductibles of premiums for properties that have Chinese drywalls.

Most of the state’s residents who rebuilt their houses after Hurricane Katrina had revealed that the drywall imported from China emits methane, sulfur and other chemicals that caused damage to appliances and homes and have caused health problems for residents.

A big number of Louisiana residents have complained that they are about to lose their coverage because of the Chinese drywall-related claims that they filed. There are also homeowners in the area who have revealed that they have not reported problems related with the drywall for fear of being dropped by insurance companies.

The Senate Insurance Committee has approved the measure amid objections from house insurance companies who have asserted that the measure violates existing contracts and would cause insurance rates in Louisiana to rise.

The legislative bill covers drywall manufactured or imported from China prior to December 31, 2009. Those with insurance policies that have been running for three years or so are protected from lack of renewal or cancellation under existing regulations. The latest bill would affect people whose insurance coverage had been running for less than three years.

According to legislators, homeowners who violate these specifications will be penalized and will be asked to pay the amount equal to half of the value of the insurance for the property, plus lawyer fees and court costs.

So far, the federal court has received more than 2,000 claims over the drywall, and together with state courts, has ruled on class action lawsuits related to the issue. Meanwhile, the Attorney General Office of Louisiana is suing the manufacturers and developers of the drywall on behalf of the local government.

The Louisiana bill is expected to provide some protection to homeowners who are at risk of losing their house insurance policies over the Chinese drywall issue. The Senate is in the process of deliberating on the legislative measure.

There is probably no such thing as cheap home insurance in the United States anymore, but homeowners are getting some positive news in the insurance department in terms of improved security.

A bill of rights for homeowners’ insurance in the Gulf Coast was able to get through the House through a 108-6 vote and is now on its way to the Senate Insurance Committee. It is the second in a three-year period that the House Insurance Committee needed to pass a bill of insurance.

House legislators stated that one of the biggest issues that concern Gulf Coast residents is insurance and the passage of the bill of rights is a significant development in terms of protecting consumers in the area.

The Legislature, reports revealed, has yet to pass a single legislation that addresses insurance claims handling since the Katrina disaster. That makes House Bill 563 an important piece of legislation for Gulf Coast home owners. According to market analysts, the fact that the bill sailed easily through the House also adds to the optimism among residents that their housing-related problems are not being ignored.

Although cheap home insurance is something that is hard to find in the whole country, proponents of the House bill stated that the current bill will provide homeowners with some security in terms of buying insurance policies which can be considered a great help.

They further added that the bill will provide homeowners with knowledge on what they can expect when purchasing a policy and when they make a claim and it will offer home owners a stronger traction in terms of protecting their homes and themselves.

According to some supporters of the bill, the Senate Insurance Committee has yet to work on any protection bill for policyholders and they would need to be encouraged to look into the current bill of rights.

Proponents have also added that one of the most common complaints against such bills is that they can change the way business is done in home insurance and that these bills can discourage parties involved from writing policies.

Despite the fact that majority of Gulf Coast homeowners do not find it easy to get cheap home insurance, the bill being considered by the Senate Insurance Committee is expected to provide them with some protection that can partially offset the impact of insurance policy prices.

A situation might prove to be of interest to home insurance companies in California. According to reports, homeowner and auto insurance firm Mercury Insurance became the subject of a Market Conduct Examination by the state Department of Insurance.

The department has alleged that Mercury might have overcharged thousands of clients in the state for homeowners and auto insurance. This, according to reports, is a potential violation of California’s insurance statues.

The Market Conduct Exam covered the period March 1, 2007-May 31, 2007. According to the state insurance department, during the period examined, the company may have violated certain insurance codes which resulted in clients being denied insurance coverage or getting overcharged.

The examination result alleged that the insurance firm has failed to take corrective actions with regards to violations of California laws identified by the Department of Insurance from examinations held in 1998 and 2002.

Furthermore, the company also supposedly failed to collect information on prior accidents involving a certain driver during the driver’s automobile insurance application and process of underwriting. The required information was supposedly meant to ensure that surcharges will be applied only to accidents wherein the person insured is the one at fault.

Another alleged violation that might be of interest to home insurance companies in the state is that insurance premium credits of home owners were reportedly not applied in a consistent manner or whenever such credits were due.

Mercury Insurance Group is comprised of three units; Mercury Casualty, California Automobile Insurance Co. and Mercury Insurance Co. The company is given 10 days to address and correct each violation as enumerated in the exam.

The violations need to be corrected, according to reports, or the company will face a fine of $5,000 for each identified violation and additional $5,000 should the violations be proven to have been committed in a willful manner.

Meanwhile, Mercury has denied committing the alleged violations and the investigation is still ongoing. Conclusions and definite charges have yet to be made against the insurance company.

The situation involving Mercury Insurance Group might prove to be of interest to home insurance companies in California, particularly in terms of state statues governing home owners’ insurance charges.

Home insurance companies writing policies in Florida got their premium hike requests after the state Senate and House passed their versions of the home insurance rate increase bill in the middle of March.

The bill would allow home insurers to increase their premiums throughout the state by a total average of 33 percent over the next 3 years. The increase rate limit is 5 percent for the first year, 10 percent for the following year and 15 percent for the third year. The premiums can increase in certain areas by more than the average rate statewide.

According to supporters of the bill, the increase in rates would attract more insurance firms to write house insurance policies throughout the state and strengthen the Florida real estate insurance market. It would also increase the ability of insurers to pay claims in case a major hurricane hits the state again.

Opponents of the bill, however, argued that home insurance rates already shot up in Florida after the hurricanes in 2004 and in 2005 and that homeowners cannot afford further rate increases.

Bill Newton, head of the Florida Consumer Action Network, asked legislators not to pass the bill because they already passed previously a 10-percent yearly increase requested by the home insurance companies.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist and Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate Sean Shaw also opposed the bill. State senators who did not vote for the bill were Ronda Storms, Alex Villalobos, Joe Negron and Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Fasano.

FCAN head Newton expressed his concerns about the fact that all Democrats on the insurance committee passed the legislation and other insurance bills.

Previously, the state Senate passed a property insurance legislation that allow insurers to pass certain coverage costs to homeowners, such as backup coverage costs and inflation-related costs.

According to Senator Garrett Richter, the bill was designed to address the cost drivers that are making insurers insolvent. Over the past year, the state of Florida has taken over three home insurers because of their financial difficulties, including one insurer providing workers compensation coverage.

The past few years also saw some major insurers like State Farm threatening to stop writing home insurance policies in Florida if their requests for substantial rate increases were rejected. The approval of the rate increases over the past weeks is expected to appease major home insurance companies, according to some supporters of the bill.

You can now get a home insurance quote online quickly, but make sure you are getting it from a listed comparison website.

A listed website is a site that has one or more of the following: it has been accredited by the Best Business Bureau, has been included in Top Ten lists, has been reviewed in recognized websites, has high rankings in Alexa or other traffic analysis systems or has been rated high in consumer surveys.

It is important that you choose a reputable comparison website to ensure you are getting the right and updated data from a recognized and stable home insurance company. Good comparison sites represent reputable insurance companies.

If you are new to the house insurance industry, here are some of the insurance firms usually mentioned in top-ten lists or consumer surveys in random order: Allstate, State Farm, Progressive, Hartford, Geico, Amica, Alfa, Nationwide, Farmers, Cincinnati and American Family.

If a number of these firms are represented by the comparison site, then the comparison website is more likely to be reputable.

There are also comparison sites that require you to provide your email address, including detailed information about your house, before they give you a home insurance quote, so this is another reason to make sure you are dealing with a BBB-accredited site.

If you want just an estimate of a standard home insurance, there are sites that need only two pieces of information: your zip code and the year your house was built.

After getting the best insurance quote from a comparison site, you can also check the rate given to you by visiting the website of the insurance firm recommended. Insurance company websites give more specific information as to how they can reduce your rates or how they give you price discounts in ways different from other insurance firms.

According to insurance experts, do not rely too much on company loyalty for discounts. They say that among the best ways to get discounts is increasing the deductibles. However, increase your deductibles only to a point affordable to you in case you have to make a claim.

Remember also that insurance rates are higher in coastal areas and in fire-prone areas and that some companies do not operate in certain states or areas of the country.

On the whole, make sure that the home insurance quote you are getting is for an insurance policy that covers most or all housing risks in your area.

Getting an insurance quote from the top insurers in your state ensures that you are getting reliable information and that you are giving your personal information to the right parties and not to fraudulent insurance businesses.

A lot of websites now are offering all types of insurance quotes, but before they provide you with their response, they first require you to fill up an online form and disclose your financial and personal information. If you are not careful, your information could be sold to marketers or worse, you could become a victim of identity theft.

There are, however, providers of insurance quotes that need only basic information such as name of city and state, zip code, type of house, number of bedrooms, estimate area, age of house and other information. You could try these just to get some estimates and have a general comparison of quotes from several insurance companies.

You can get the names of reputable companies in your state by contacting your state department of insurance. A number of websites operated by state insurance departments are user-friendly, updated frequently and complete with information needed by consumers.

Another resource is the website of the New York City-based Insurance Information Institute, an organization founded in the 1960s to educate consumers about insurance. This resource helps you how to get and use a home insurance quote properly. It also has a feature where you can see a list of home insurance companies operating in your state.

Another website that you can check is the insurance.insureuonline.org, which is operated by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. This site informs consumers on how they can protect themselves from insurance fraud.

You can also know the names of insurance firms with good customer feedback by reading industry surveys and online reviews and by checking the most visited home insurance websites.

A survey conducted by J.D. Power showed that the top companies with the highest customer satisfaction ratings in 2009 were Amica Mutual, Auto-Owners, Erie Insurance, State Farm, USAA, Alfa, Hartford and Cincinnati Insurance. For a start, you can get quotes from the websites of these firms and then compare.

Additionally, the Amazon.com-owned website traffic information provider Alexa lists State Farm, Geico, Farmers Insurance, Allstate and Nationwide as among the insurance sites getting the most traffic from consumers.

All in all, remember that the two most important things to consider when you are getting an insurance quote are the stability of the insurance firm and the perils covered by your policy.
