Home Insurance: Being Wise Pays

June 9th, 2009

Home insurance is a necessity. In other words, every homeowner needs this. A lot of mortgage and lending companies do not approve loans until the applicant shows proof of a home insurance.
As a homeowner though, how do you make sure that you are getting the best out of your home insurance? Here are tips which you can use for you to make sure that you are getting the right coverage and compensation from your home insurance company:

  1. Security systems. It is important that you have a working security system and smoke alarms around your house. This would help ensure you safety and would also lower your payment requirements by about 5 percent a year. You have to make sure also that you have proof that your house is in fact being monitored through a central station. With smoke alarms, you can save up to 10 percent on total premiums. Most important of all, it can save you from sure danger.
  2. Increase your deductible. Generally, the higher your deductible is, the lower the annual premiums you have to pay. But there are problems that arise with this. When you select a considerably high deductible, you would tend to pay for minor damages and claims such as damaged sheetrock or broken windows.
  3. Multiple policy discounts. A lot of home insurance companies offer discounts of up to 10 percent to customers who get their other insurances from the same company. You might want to consider doing this to save on your premiums. However, make sure that your insurance company is secure.
  4. Construction. If you are planning to add some rooms or other areas to your house, then plan ahead. Remember that there are materials that would cost more to get insured such as wood, since these are materials that can be easily damaged in case of fire and other disasters. Steel and cement are the more affordable materials to use for you to be able to get a good premiums insurance price.
  5. Mortgage. Be faithful in paying your home mortgage. Home insurance companies who see customers being able to pay their home mortgages tend to offer discounts. The reason for this is that insurance companies who see that customers actually own the home already think that homeowners would take care of the property well.

House Insurance Myths

June 9th, 2009

When it comes to house insurance, you have to be sure of all the information you get. Without the proper information, you might end up getting the wrong insurance policy. Worse, you might not get proper coverage.

There are a lot of house insurance myths and misconceptions among all of us. These myths can cost you a lot of your hard-earned money. Before you get blinded by these myths, it is best if you gather all the information you can and evaluate them properly. Here are common house insurance myths you have to stay away from:

Myth Number One: The benefits you would get are roughly equal to the premiums you pay.

Truth: a lot of people feel shortchanged when they do not file claims through the years that they are paying for their insurance. The truth is, your insurance should serve as your protection from disasters and catastrophes, things that your regular budget cannot afford to handle. If you choose to get a home insurance premium that is higher, then you would be able to save around 35 percent of your premiums .

Myth Number Two: House insurance should cover disasters that would most likely happen.

Truth: In California, around 80 percent of homeowners do not have earthquake insurance. This goes to show that common disasters are not normally covered by house insurance. It would just be too expensive for an insurance company to shoulder the expenses of a lot of homeowners due to an earthquake. However, insurance companies offer add-ons or riders for homeowners who want their houses to be protected in case a common disaster damages their home.

Myth Number Three: you should only buy the minimum insurance premiums since house insurance are rip-offs.

Truth: You should not skimp on your insurance. The problem with this is that if your house gets damage, you would get only what you paid for. Instead of being able to maximize your insurance, you would end up getting close to nothing. The bigger insurance package you get, the more protection you would get.
There are other ways for you to save on house insurance costs. The key is to get to know the premiums well, and then choose what could work best for you and your house.

Agents Preferred Over Online Home Insurance Access

June 2nd, 2009

Three fourths of American consumers would still go to a home insurance agent than get it online. However, in the younger age brackets, they prefer getting theirs online, because of its ease and convenience. Moreover, younger people are more accustomed to using the Internet, then the older ones. These are the results of a recent survey conducted by Accenture, a Bermuda-based company.
Other results show that 1,005 consumers aged 18 and above own an insurance product.

Here are the key findings of the survey conducted:

  • Consumers would want to buy insurance products through an agent, specially for auto and home insurance plans.
  • Three fourths of the total number of respondents would want to buy life insurance products from trusted sources, such as a financial advisor or an employer.
  • More affluent and younger consumers would want to buy products through the Internet than buying them through agents.
  • 43 percent of respondents aged 18 to 24 would want to buy auto or home insurance online.
  • Two thirds of respondents who currently own auto and home insurance plans currently do not have enough to pay for their bills.
  • Half of the respondents fell they are paying more than how much their insurance premiums are actually worth.
  • One fourth of the total number of respondents feels that they do not have enough information about their insurances, and how the current economic situation would affect their insurance policies.
  • 17 percent of the total number of respondents is thinking of buying a new insurance policy, with the goal of getting more savings.
  • Younger insurance plan holders are more likely to switch plans than those who belong to the older age bracket.
  • Younger consumers have less confidence in their insurance policies than those who are older. 43 percent of respondents aged 18 to 24 have concerns about the ability of their insurance company to give them coverage. On the other hand, only 26 percent of consumers aged 45 and above fell that way.

The results of the survey show preferences and perspective about different kinds of insurance such as auto, life or home insurance. The data strongly suggests that the opinions of a person towards insurance depend primarily on age.
